Push-X Phoenix Contact: terminal blocks and connectors for fast wiring

In industrial wiring, time is rarely lost in the design phase. It is lost in repetitive operations, tool handling, insertion errors and rework.

The Push-X technology from Phoenix Contact addresses exactly these issues by introducing a spring-based connection system that separates conductor insertion from clamping activation.

The result is a direct, tool-free connection with minimal insertion force, applicable to DIN rail terminal blocks and PCB connectors, ensuring consistent performance throughout the entire wiring chain.

What changes compared to traditional spring connections

Push-X uses a pre-tensioned contact spring and a connection chamber supplied in the open position.
This design detail makes a real difference during installation.

The wiring process works as follows:

  • the conductor is inserted directly into the open chamber
  • no tools or significant force are required for insertion
  • clamping occurs only when the locking mechanism is activated
  • once clamped, the conductor is securely held by the spring

For disconnection, a release button reopens the chamber and allows the conductor to be removed; the system automatically returns ready for a new wiring cycle.

This approach enables more controlled operations, reducing errors and variability between operators.

Supported conductors and application flexibility

Push-X technology allows the direct connection of:

  • solid conductors
  • stranded conductors
  • stranded conductors with or without ferrules

Performance remains consistent even with smaller cross-sections, making the system suitable for both control wiring and power connections.

Push-X XT series terminal blocks: front connection and panel organization

XT terminal blocks are designed for standard automation applications, featuring front connection and structured cable management within the control panel.

Main technical features

  • nominal cross-sections: 1.5 mm² and 2.5 mm²
  • connection range: 0.25 to 4 mm²
  • direct conductor insertion, tool-free
  • visual and acoustic feedback confirming correct wiring

The XT series is available in various configurations: feed-through, multi-conductor, double-level and plug-in versions.
Front and lateral marking grooves facilitate clear circuit identification, particularly in high-density control panels.

Push-X XTV series terminal blocks: efficient management of larger cross-sections

As conductor cross-sections increase, mechanical constraints also become more significant.
For this reason, XTV terminal blocks feature a lateral vertical connection, reducing cable bending radius and improving cable routing within the control panel.

Main technical features

  • nominal cross-sections: 6 mm², 10 mm² and 16 mm²
  • connection range: 0.5 to 25 mm²
  • lateral Push-X connection, tool-free

Feed-through, multi-conductor and test-disconnect versions are available, designed for power and distribution applications.
By combining XT and XTV series, Push-X technology covers an overall range from 0.25 to 25 mm².

Mechanical reliability designed for industrial logistics

An often overlooked aspect is product behavior before installation.
Push-X terminal blocks are engineered to keep the connection chamber open until actual wiring takes place, even after transportation and handling.

For this reason, they are subjected to:

  • vibration tests
  • transport simulations
  • climatic tests
  • repeated drop tests

The objective is to prevent accidental activation of the mechanism prior to use, reducing scrap and production issues.

Push-X PCB connectors: technology continuity on electronic assemblies

Push-X technology extends beyond the control panel.
The same connection principle is applied to PCB connectors, enabling direct conductor wiring on machine-mounted devices and electronic modules.

Key features

  • tool-free connection
  • support for stranded conductors with or without ferrules
  • quick release via push button
  • visual and acoustic feedback
  • compatibility with corresponding-pitch COMBICON headers

This makes it possible to implement Push-X on existing PCB designs without redesigning the interface, while simplifying assembly and maintenance processes.

Push-X Applications and Technical Support

Push-X technology can be implemented across a wide range of industrial automation environments, from control panel manufacturing to on-machine wiring and PCB integration.
