An innovative category of industrial sensors is represented by smart sensors, that permit to collect and merge data into streams of meaningful information, that are actionable in real-time, and allow assets to be monitored and optimized from anywhere.

Rockwell Automation provides a range of smart sensors and IoT that can be easily integrated with the Connected Enterprise by connecting the IO-Link enabled device into an IO-Link master module. It is an open-standard protocol of serial peer-to- peer communication, by which data can be easily transferred from the sensor directly into a control system in a very efficient manner.

Unlike traditional sensors, smart detection technology allows you to enhance knowledge of the status of industrial machines, by optimising the plant processes and the flexible operations of production. Smart sensors store a set of profiles into the controller and they could be recalled, at a later stage, according to the type of the processed product. This aspect allows the workers to reduce sensors configuration time down to mere milliseconds.

“In addition to preventing production losses, smart sensors can help soften the blow of workforce impacts”, as correctly argues Kevin Zomchek, Business Manager of Rockwell Automation. Indeed, smarter, diagnostic-rich sensors will greatly match the need of filling competence gap of workforce with less experience according to machinery and plants functioning.

Moreover, Rockwell Automation offers a comprehensive solution marked by Allen-Bradley including Studio 5000 Logix Designer™ sofware, that allows an enhanced level of integration plus various functionality not available with competitive offerings.

Rockwell Automation continues to invest in the evolution of Connected Enterprise. For this reason in early November 2017 it created a partnership with “The Hive”, a Silicon Valley innovation fund and co-creation studio, to gain access to an ecosystem of innovators and technology start-ups with a focus on applications of artificial intelligence to industrial automation.

Elik Fooks, senior vice president for corporate development of Rockwell Automation, said that: “Artificial Intelligent can help manufacturers unlock data, contextualize it, and take action”.

The solution of the smart sensors integration makes it possibile to reduce time to market, to decrease TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), to improve the utilisation of the asset and to manage corporate risks.

This is why the company has decided to expand its range of industrial sensors towards the category of smart sensors
