PRODUCTS

In this short article we will talk about the main features of Rockwell Automation Kinetix® VPL Low Inertia Servomotors and how they can be configured.

Rockwell Automation VPL Low Inertia Servo Motors provide high dynamic performance and complete the VP Servo Motor Series product portfolio. They feature single-turn or multi-turn high-resolution absolute encoders, and are available with or without 24V DC brakes. Characterized by their compact size, VPL brushless servomotors meet demanding requirements of high-performance motion systems.

Kinetix® VPL low inertia servo motors were designed in conjunction with the Kinetix® 5500 to optimize machinery operations through a single cable solution. This system allows you to minimize the required energy power to drive the motor.

This in turn reduces the input of energy into the system. This operation together with the reduction of the cable system and the compact size of the combination of motor and drive, allows you to saving system costs.

These servo motors are also optimized to work with Kinetix® 5700 servo drives for extended range and functionality. The 5700 Series of Rockwell Automation servo drives extends the value of Integrated Motion control over EtherNet/IP to enhance machine builder applications.
DSL feedback ports provide support for Kinetix® VP servo motors with single cable technology. This allows machine builders to use a single power cable for motor, brake and feedback thus helping to reduce the wiring required for the motion control part

What is the power range of the VPL servomotor?

The Kinetix® 5500 drive has a continuous power range from 0.6 kW to 14.6 kW. The continuous rated power output on the VPL is between 190 W and 7 kW. The peak power rating can increase and that is why the power range of the drive is higher than the power range of the motor.
The Kinetix® 5700 drive, on the other hand, has a power range from 1.6 to 112kw. Even when using Kinetix® 5700s, the power of the VPL motors is always the same.

Maybe you are wondering if mechanically the VPLservo motor will be compatible with the dimensions of the MPL series.
Yes it is. The VPL low inertia servo motor has almost identical mounting and shaft dimensions to the MPL series. In fact they use the standard IEC 72-1 flange numbers.

Can the Rockwell Automation VPL Servo Motor be used in the food industry?
The VPL is not qualified for food industry. However, Rockwell Automation has designed the VPF series suitable for this type of industry.
The product is designed with a white food-safe paint, while the shaft and fixing devices are made of stainless steel. It also features a mechanical seal for food. It complies with REACH and RoHS industry standards and features small frame food motors.

What are the main differences of VPL servomotors compared to the MPL series?
The VPL solution, together with the Kinetix® 5500, offers similar torque performance at lower speeds than MPL servo drives can offer. This combination provides the benefits of a smaller footprint, fewer SKUs and simplified installation.

The Kinetix® 5500 or 5700 servo drive, the Kinetix VP low inertia servo motor and the single cable technology improve the efficiency of your motion applications without sacrificing performance.
Single cable technology, as an integrated motion solution over EtherNet/IP™, is very compact, easy to use and simplifies system wiring. This therefore allows OEMs to maximize performance, improving the reliability of their motion applications.
