During the Automation Fair, Rockwell Automation’s annual specialized event, there was a discussion on the digital transformation path of the Food&Beverage sector.
The first consideration that we want to highlight you concerns in IIoT devices. Smart devices and software are already widespread in this sector, but a good part of users do not know which of these tools are most useful and efficient for their industrial applications. When it comes to digital transformation, it is good to consider the type of system to be analyzed and consequently, the final application. If we seek greater efficiency and quality in our plants, these are the elements that will define our digitization path, and not others.
In the most basic formula, digital transformation consists in adding microprocessors and Ethernet ports to industrial equipment and connected devices. The goal is to create an industrial network of connected, secure devices that transfer useful data for internal strategic choices. Once this first part has been completed, we proceed with the introduction to cloud services: the data collected by the interconnected devices are saved in a virtual space so that productive information can be accessed from anywhere.
1. Inventory and verification of hardware and software already present in your system
First of all it is important to know the technologies that are already in use in your business. It’s important to know what their problems are, especially in terms of connectivity, how their security status is and how they communicate with each other. Another element to evaluate in this phase is if those who deal with infrastructures in different production areas (IT and OT) work collaboratively.
2. Work with your workforce
Another step towards digital transformation is to communicate to employees a common vision from all managers. If everyone is aligned with the organization’s objectives, there will be greater synergy and harmony within the production reality. In a transaction phase like this, everyone’s contribution is important, from those who already carry out a proactive activity for digital transformation to those who, from the outside, explore and inform the colleagues.
3. Digitized solutions and new business models
Another important moment towards digital transformation concerns the implementation of dedicated solutions. For example, think of cloud computing and all the solutions aimed at improving the industrial automation and the quality of the production plant activity:
Cloud computing includes security and privacy protection, cost reduction and global data control.
Using digital technologies and data to optimize your business allows you to build strategies that are increasingly in step with technological, organizational, social, cultural and managerial changes.
Thank’s to Rockwell Automation for the good advices during the Automation Fair
